National Quilting Month

Maybe you’re like me and are trying to clear your schedule for some time to bond with your sewing machine and quilts. National Quilting Month is celebrated in March - yes, the entire month. Now, that’s something to get excited about.

To celebrate, I am repurposing two beautifully pieced vests and will transform them into a wall hanging or a lap quilt (depending on the size). In doing so, the gradient of the colorful blocks can be more fully enjoyed on a daily basis.

Each vest was assembled in a beautiful colorway; the front and back panels have been firmly joined together. I am finding some time each day to disassemble the sleeveless garments.

With care, I am using my trusty seam ripper to remove the vest lining from the pieced panels.

The red rose motif's placement is on the center back of one of the vests. It will remain intact and become a striking focal point of the repurposed creation.

As the vests air out, I've been sorting through a collection of quilt tops, doilies and letters while trying to find a way to honor these gifts. Each item is a heartfelt connection to the relative who created it.
Where it feels right, I will bring artistic grace into the decision-making process to reimagine heirloom pieces so they remain cherished mementos.
"In nature, nothing is created and nothing is destroyed, but everything is transformed." ~Antoine Laurent Lavoisier
This month I am also adding an outer border to a quilt for delivery to a longarm quilter; drawing a themed motif to accompany the quilt which will serve as my 'notecard'; and putting the finishing touches on a quilt label template. Once projects are completed, I will return to my writing of short stories about unlabeled quilts and continue with designs for an upcoming fabric collection.
If you are finding it hard to carve out some time for quilting, the third Saturday in March (this year on the 21st) is National Quilting Day. What special project(s) will you be working on?
Thank you for stopping by.
